Styling tip and tricks

If you don’t know what to wear, no worries! Here are some checklist items that may be helpful!

But most of all be you!

CHOOSE YOUR PALETTE FIRST. IS IT FALL, SPRING, SUMMER, WINTER?
Think in terms of tones: blue tones, earth tones, neutrals, pastels, etc.

DON’T MATCH. COORDINATE.
Start with the youngest and pull colors from their outfit to dress and layer everyone else. Layering can make a huge difference in tying in all the colors.

CHOOSE NEUTRAL /SIMPLE CLOTHING
If you have no idea what colors to wear, I suggest wearing any combination of cream, gray, and tan. It is pretty hard to mess that up and looks good in almost every setting. Subdued colors, solids, and muted prints work well. Skip logos and words as they draw the eye and not in a good way. Play with textures and layers!

SHOP AT THE SAME STORE.
Make coordinating outfits easy by shopping at the same store or brand. This is especially helpful when there are multiple children to dress.

ADD A POP OF COLOR
Don’t be afraid of a little color! You don’t have to go overboard, but picking up bold colors from a more subtle outfit for a pop of color can look amazing. For example, if dad is wearing a plaid shirt, draw one color from it and have one child wear a pop of that color. However, No fluorescent colors! The shadows cast from Neon is not something easily corrected.

USE YOUR GO-TO OUTFIT
Look in your closets and pull out the outfit that is your very favorite. Everyone has a go-to outfit that they choose when going out with friends, the outfit that fits perfectly and makes you feel fabulous. Same with the kids!

FIT YOUR STYLE TO YOUR SEASON.
If its cold, wear layers- tights, jackets, scarfs, etc. If its hot- wear sundresses and short sleeves. We live in ND- it can be 80 degrees one day and 30 the next. Please watch the weather, littles are not happy when they are to hot or to cold which will not make for a great session.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE SHOES.
If you’re not the type of family who likes being barefoot, be sure to keep your footwear in mind. Nothing will throw your look off more than a ratty old pair of shoes

DRESS UP AND IRON OR UNWRINKLE YOUR CLOTHING
Professional photographs should be considered a special occasion and no one likes wrinkles!(I will not smooth or retouch wrinkled clothing)

HIGHLIGHT YOUR BEST ASSET
Wearing something that highlights your best asset during your session will give you a boost of confidence throughout the shoot that will definitely show in your final images. Wearing snug fitting clothing is waaaaay better then wearing baggy items. Trust me, I want you to love your images and ill fitting clothing will be the first thing you see

KEEP COMFORT FIRST.
A mom in a short skirt and high heels is less likely to play wildly with her kids or get messy so be comfortable first. What you want to remember in 10 or 20 years isn’t how talented you were at styling your kids, but how happy you were together as a family. Pick the clothes that will let you run freely and be blissfully carefree!

LET HAIR MOVE
Perfectly kept hair will not happen. I joke at all sessions, ‘Many famous people pay for expensive wind machines but here Mother Nature in ND always gives us one heck of a deal!

ACCESSORIZE
Accessories give your photographs that needed punch! They lend pops of color, personality, and interest. Everybody wears them well and they work for all ages. However, please remember for littles, bigger bows are not always better. Simple and danity are your best bet.
